Position Overview

KSL TV is seeking a dynamic investigative producer who is passionate about questioning those in power, holding government accountable, exposing corruption, helping consumers solve problems, and providing viewers with the information they need to be informed citizens. The ideal candidate will have experience with government records requests, data journalism, and media law. As a member of an award-winning team of KSL Investigators, the producer will be responsible for conceptualizing, researching and writing high-impact investigative stories that showcase exceptional storytelling, with a commitment to follow-ups. Primary focus is on regularly produced content both broadcast and digital, outside of the daily assignment rotation, while contributing original angles with investigative sensibilities to breaking news and major news events. Successful candidates will set an example of professionalism in skill, attitude and commitment.

Note: Work configurations are subject to change based on business needs and at company discretion.

This position is an hybrid role that requires the employee to occasionally work at our Salt Lake City site.

Compensation

$60,000 – $80,000. Salary to be determined by multiple factors including but not limited to evaluation of the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant along with internal equity and alignment with market data.

Responsibilities:

What You Will Do: Primary job duties will include, but are not limited to: Work with managers, photographers, editors, and graphic designers to write and produce highly visual and compelling investigative stories of the highest quality. Develop a network of sources to break investigative stories of significance in the community and add context to breaking news coverage. Mine tips, sources, data, and public records requests to pinpoint issues of significant local impact with a focus on solutions. Work with managers and legal team to ensure stories are accurate, ethical, complete, fair, and well-documented. Conduct interviews, gather information, log and organize footage, arrange for graphics and supervise editing sessions. Meet all story deadlines. Work effectively in a team environment with various managers, reporters, photographers, and editors. Successfully write for multiple on-air investigative team members. Innovate elements to showcase investigations on a variety of broadcast, web, and social media platforms. Balance long-term investigations with more short-term consumer or data-driven investigative stories and original investigative angles on breaking news and major events. Regularly enterprise and pitch investigative story ideas while also passionately pursuing stories as assigned. Maintain highly organized files of government records requests, appeals and data. Demonstrate a knowledge of and strong commitment to editorial judgment, including a clear understanding of journalism ethics and laws, as well as a journalist’s right to records, information and access. Provide investigative research expertise and support to other team members as needed.

Requirements:

Skills and Experience We Are Looking For: Minimum of 3 years journalism experience – investigative producing and/or reporting a must. College degree in journalism, communications, related field or equivalent. Strong investigative skills and a strategic mindset. Ability to vet tips and story ideas to identify and prioritize original investigative stories with broad community impact. Self-motivated and capable of prioritizing tasks and juggling multiple investigative stories simultaneously. Ability to organize time and resources effectively to meet all deadlines. Track record of cultivating key sources and enterprising original stories. Excellent computer research skills, with the ability to obtain, analyze, simplify, and visualize data for on-air and online reporting. Working knowledge of open records laws to obtain government documents and datasets. Ability to write in a clear and conversational manner. Proven ability to produce investigative stories under heavy deadline pressure without compromising accuracy or credibility. Valid driver license and proven ability to safely drive company or personal vehicle (as case may be) without exposing the company to serious liability risks. Consistently able to work hours required. Work more when required to meet deadlines including flexible shifts, weekends, holidays, evenings, rotating days, overtime, etc. Physical Demands Receive, process, and maintain information through oral and/or written communication effectively. Substantial physical movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers. Ability to extend hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction with good eye and hand coordination. Lift, move, and carry up to 20 pounds on occasion. Must be able to sit for long periods of time.
