This position is responsible for all technical standards of locally produced programming including news broadcasts, digital productions, commercials, promotions, public services productions and special events both live and pre-recorded.


Job Responsibilities
  • Direct live and taped programming within format guidelines including newscasts, digital content, commercial production and station promotions.
  • Operates board.
  • Read, study and research scripts to determine how they should be directed.
  • Confer and collaborate with managers, crew members, on air talent, producers, and the creative services team as needed to discuss details of production.
  • Responsible for ensuring all aspects of the program are complete before the program begins.
  • Plan details such as framing, composition, camera movement, sound, for each shot or scene.
  • Along with producer, establish pace of news broadcasts and sequences of segments according to time requirements and accessibility. Ensures program runs smoothly during live broadcasts.
  • Establish and maintain procedures, workflow, systems, and best practices for digital platform content creation. Train others in procedures and best practices.
  • Manage live digital streams as well as produced content for digital platforms.
  • Handles last minute and unexpected changes in a professional, poised manner during live broadcasts. Communicates calmly, quickly and clearly to all involved as needed.
  • Maintains high knowledge of equipment. Notifies Production Manager of equipment needs and problems. Ensures equipment is maintained.
  • Assumes responsibility of newscasts production and other digital programs. Offers suggestions for improvement.
  • Keeps up to date with new technology by reading trade publications and attends local equipment demonstrations.
  • Ability to relate and communicate in a productive manner to a variety of people including on air talent, visitors, production crew, producers, creative services and management. Treats co-workers and visitors with respect.
  • Understands and can articulate station's programming direction and philosophies.
  • Report to work on time and work established schedule/hours.
  • Other duties as assigned and needed.


  • Four year degree in Communications, Digital Media, or a related field preferred
  • Two years' experience as a technical director in a TV broadcast facility preferred.
  • Knowledge of state-of-the-art broadcast production equipment and techniques used in producing and directing live and taped productions required.
  • Strong working knowledge of news procedures, studio camera, floor directing, VTR operations, audio operations and character generation.
  • Strong working knowledge of digital media, social media, and other streaming platforms
  • Strong leadership ability.
  • Ability to work well under pressure.
Physical Requirements
  • Regularly required to see, talk and hear.
  • Frequently is required to sit and use hands, along with fingers, to handle or feel.
  • Occasionally required to stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.
  • Ability to frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Vision to distinguish between controls on board and scripts; ability to see and comprehend what is on computer and television monitors and make work related decisions based on what is seen.
  • Work under tight deadlines and in pressure situations.
  • Ability to communicate information and ideas in English both verbally and in writing so that others will understand.
