Position: KSL-TV is seeking a dynamic individual to shoot, produce and edit engaging, in-depth, community-oriented stories focused on the most important issues facing our Utah community. The compelling enterprise, accountability stories will capture the threads that hold a community together, touching on important issues surrounding family, health, emotional and physical well-being, education, religion, safety, growth, politics, government policies and quality of life through Utah’s wealth of diversity in thought, ethnicity, culture, and beliefs. Community journalism requires both knowing the community outside of the newsroom and working together within the station to showcase the best of what Utah has to offer.
The ideal candidate will: Develop deep sourcing and build trusting relationships with diverse communities across our state; conduct in-depth interviews with experts and story subjects and write creative content for broadcast, digital platforms, and social media; display strong professional and informative on-camera communication skills.
MMJ capabilities are strongly preferred. While the chosen candidate will be expected to primarily shoot and edit these stories, they will also collaborate with a team and may partner with photojournalists as needed.
This is a hybrid in-person/remote role that requires the employee to regularly work on-site. In order to enter Company premises, individuals must provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 or evidence of a negative COVID-19 test within the previous seven days.
Tell memorable stories in an engaging and authentic manner.
Develop news sources for special areas of interest, as well as general assignment reports.
Strong command of journalistic standards and ethics.
Ability to analyze facts and make judgments about relevance, newsworthiness, fairness, etc., under pressure and on deadline.
Strive to achieve accuracy, fairness and topical relevance in reporting and production of stories.
Cultural competence and awareness of best practices related to inclusive journalism.
Ability to write clearly, accurately, and creatively on multiple platforms and social networks.
Apply advanced photography and editing skills to each report to maximize story-telling appeal.
Contribute other creative story-telling techniques and ideas to production of stories. Produce an attractive product by utilizing fresh approaches to packaging and production.
Work effectively in a team environment and collaborate to create compelling content.
Consistently meet deadlines as defined by KSL management, News Director, and Enterprise Managing Editors.
Write and post regularly on all digital platforms including social media.
Set an example of professionalism, collaboration, and leadership.
Required Skills & Experience:
Minimum three (3) years of commercial TV broadcast journalism/reporting experience or equivalent.
Experienced in videography and editing.
College degree in journalism, communications, related field, or equivalent preferred.
Willingness to accept responsibility and work under minimal supervision.
Ability to use initiative and show innovation in problem solving.
Self-starter, capable of performing under pressure particularly during peak hours to meet job deadlines as the services performed affect the ability of others in the department to do their work.
Valid driver’s license and proven ability to safely drive company vehicle or personal vehicle (as case may be) without exposing the company to serious liability risks.
Work in compliance with Company policies and procedures.
Project an appropriate professional appearance and demeanor.
Knowledge of news scripting program ENPS and the ability to utilize state-of-the-art television technology.
Ability to edit video content on Adobe Premiere preferred.
Familiarity with digital video camera operation preferred.
Proven ability to handle stress.
Prefer those with knowledge of community organizations and resources.
Lift, move and carry up to 20 pounds on occasion.
Ability to extend hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction with good eye and hand coordination.
Substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hand, and/or fingers.
Receive, process, and maintain information through oral and/or written communication.
Ability to sit for long periods of time.
